Trading desk

A trading desk is a centralised team that executes programmatic media buying on behalf of advertisers, operating demand-side platforms and managing bidding strategy.

In detail

Trading desks exist either inside agencies, as independent specialists, or inside advertisers themselves. Their function is programmatic execution: operating DSPs, managing bid strategy, curating supply and optimising delivery against objectives.

In the China outbound context, trading desks are a significant part of the demand layer, because a large share of outbound budget is transacted programmatically. dentsu forecasts more than 80% of global digital investment transacting programmatically in 2026.

For a supply-side operator, the practical implication is that inventory must be reachable inside the systems desks already run. Supply that requires a parallel manual workflow is functionally invisible to a programmatic desk regardless of its quality.
